Chocolate is a favorite delicacy to enjoy on various occasions, including with loved ones or as a snack while working, relaxing, or, in this case, traveling. To keep yours from melting in flight, here are a few tips and methods.

Whether it's a souvenir from an exotic holiday destination, a specially created dessert for a loved one, or a personal treat, you probably want to enjoy your chocolate (or gift it) while it's still in its original state.

And if you're reading this, then you're likely looking for ways to keep it that way, especially while flying. While there are recommended methods, which will be explained shortly, there are some things to remember when carrying food items, including chocolates, on the plane.

Rules for Bringing Chocolates On a Plane

According to TSA guidelines, liquid chocolate may be stowed in checked-in bags as well as carry-on bags. However, there is a limit to the amount of liquid chocolate you may bring in your carry-on. It needs to be less than or equal to 3.4oz/100 ml.

If your chocolate is in solid form, the TSA also approves carrying it both in your checked bags and carry-on. However, it's worth noting that some airlines may have their own restrictions concerning chocolates so it would be good to find out what your airline has to say about this.

What You May Not Know About Traveling with Chocolates

1. The risk of chocolates melting during a flight is partially determined by the kind of chocolate.

Generally speaking, dark chocolate is said to have a lower melting point compared to milk chocolate; therefore, you may need to take extra measures to keep it from melting.

It should be noted, however, that the quality of your dark chocolate also plays a role in determining its melting point.

2. Climate matters.

If the destination you're flying to has a hot climate, then your chocolate has a higher chance of melting, especially if it is not packaged correctly.

3. You don't need to declare your chocolate at security.

Chocolates do not need to be declared to airline security, but to be safe, let the security officers know about your treats if you're carrying a large quantity.

4. You can still eat your chocolates after they have melted.

If your chocolates do melt while you're flying, they are still safe to consume. And if you prefer them solid, refrigerate them for a few hours before you indulge.

How to Keep Chocolates From Melting During Air Travel

1. Packaging

One recommended way to carry chocolate on a flight without it melting is by packing it inside an insulated bag. The insulated carrier will maintain the chocolate's temperature and keep it from melting.

You can also place ice packs inside the insulated bag or wrap your chocolate with aluminum foil to protect it from external heat. Alternatively, instead of an insulated bag, you can use a cooler, an airtight box, or a plastic container.

2. Freezing

Freezing your chocolates before boarding your flight will also help reduce the risk of melting. Your discretion is also crucial, as freezing might not be ideal if you're transporting a chocolate dessert that may spoil due to freezing.

3. Shipping

Another way to reduce the risk of melted chocolates is to have them shipped to your required location overnight or on the same day you leave.

Make sure you inform your courier of the delicacy of your items and package them according to the methods suggested above.
